Virus?: How do you know the cause of the infection is a virus?  Rarely is the tonsil, even if inflamed, is specifically cultured for a virus.  The answer to your question with the tremendous assumption that you have a viral cause of tonsillitis would be between 10 to 14 days.

Worse?: Either are not fun, and Strep is treated with antibiotics. Strep has risk of, albeit small, of affecting the kidneys and therefore it is treated with antibiotics.

Rest, fluids, OTC: Rest and fluids and patience are the first line for a viral sore throat. If there is pain, over the counter Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen can be taken. If severe and the swelling makes it difficult to swallow, see your doctor who can prescribe steroids for the swelling.

See Specialist: If you have recurrent bouts of tonsilitis that require antibiotics, removing them could provide relief. Would make an appointment with an ENT specialist to get expert advice on whether you are a surgical candidate or not.  Good luck.

Recurring tonsillitis: You would not become infected by the same strain of any virus the 2nd time. However, the tonsils are structures that are prone to infection by any germ you ingest. Recurrent tonsillitis does not imply the type of germ (viral or bacterial), just the structures involved.

There are bacterial causes which need antibiotics for resolution and viral causes which require symptomatic care. If all studies were done and there is no mono then conseder a tonsellectomy.
