Remedies: For significant sore throat with swollen tonsils / lymph nodes –  see physician & get a strep throat test/ culture. If you have strep throat, antibiotic therapy is imperative to prevent future complications. Consider tylenol (acetaminophen) or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Saltwater gargles: mix 1 tsp salt in 8 oz warm water – gargle several times a day. Or gargle with aloe vera juice twice a day.

Worse: Cold things can increase metabolic activity (=temperature) as body warms them up and maintains its temperature. "tepid" rag (~90-95f) to skin will help cool--don't use too cool water as will cause shivering and increase body temp. Sounds like needs seen in er / urgent care.

All 3 can be caused : by viral infections that will not respond to antibiotic treatment. If there is sore throat &amp; fever see a doctor for a throat swab for Group A Streptococcus. 5-25 years is the age range for susceptibility  to rheumatic fever, kidney inflammation &amp; other complications of some strains of strep. A full 10-day course of antibiotics is needed to prevent these.

Chills: Temperature control in the body is off when one is sick. At one point you may be cold and another hot. Best thing to do is make sure you are well bundled and drink lots of fluid. Tylenol (acetaminophen) will help with regulating the temperature and pain as will motrin. Viscous Lidocaine can also help provide topical relief.

Tonsillitis: cold and cough can give sore throat which is viral in nature . Paracetamol , brufen , warm saline gargles would help . If not improving see doctor for throat swab to rule out bacterial infection .

my 2 year old is on day3 of amoxicillin for tonsillitis which followed a cold.cough has lasted 3 weeks & since having the medicine the cough is worse. really husky. should i get her checked again?

Cough: Sometimes the cough can sound worse before it resolves. If she is otherwise ok, active and playful, good appetite, no fever, you can wait another day or two before having her reexamined.

Ear pain: Throat pain from a tonsillitis can refer pain up to the ear.  If you also have hearing loss, you might have an ear infection.  A cold can lead to both.  If it persists, follow up with your doctor.

Time to call in: I would call the surgeon's office during regular hours at your earliest convenience. Since this is an elective (needed) surgery it is unlikely the anesthesiologist would put her to sleep with a upper respiratory infection. At least discuss it before you show up for surgery.

Ibuprofen: You can take up to four 200mg pills 4x daily.  When you see your doctor they can talk about prescription medication such as antibiotics and possibly oral steroids for pain/swelling.
