never looked at my tonsils until 3 months ago. when i looked i saw one is larger and diff shape than the other. larger one looks the same as 3 months ago. if it were cancer would it likely have changed in size in 3 months? sometimes it has dull aches?

: Stop looking. The right side of your body is not an EXACT mirror image of the left. If tonsil is not growing (over weeks or months) no reason to be concerned

why are my tonsil to different sizes and shapes? they normally look the same, but now my right tonsil looks like it shrunk and has 3 skin-like bumps and swallowing hurts my right tonsil.

Doctor can check: A sore throat can be evaluated by a primary care doctor (or an ear-nose-throat doctor) to see what the cause might be.  Sometimes it is a strep throat bacterial infection, in which case antibiotics would be needed. Other possibilities include a viral infection, a throat ulcer, allergies, stomach acid reflux, a tonsillar abscess, etc...  A doctor has to look at the throat to diagnose it.

tonsil is a little bigger/shaped different than the other? noticed this for a month but may have been like this forever never saw. can this be normal?

Yes: Enlarged tonsils are a frequent occurrence, even when healthy, however they may cause significant discomfort if/when you do present with an illness, e.g., head cold or sore throat (especially strep throat). If you are concerned, please see your doctor. A thorough exam will help determine if an intervention, such as tonsillectomy, would benefit you and/or prevent future discomfort.

No: Laryngitis refers to an infection of the larynx or the voice box. Usually patients are hoarse with it.  The larynx closes when we speak, swallow and cough.  Tonsils are like specialized lymph nodes and are part of your immune system.  In the mouth, you actually have four tonsils...The palatine tonsils (on both sides), the adenoid (in the nasopharynx) and the lingual tonsil (back of the tongue).

: Tonsils go through a gradual progression during lifetime. They grow faster than the kid doing their work in childhood peaking in relative size at 7-9 when many kids snore as a result. They remain that size while the kid grows, making them relatively smaller by 16. Their pattern of infection and recovery can alter this baseline pattern.

Normal Variation : Yes your tonsils can vary this is very normal. Unless you are having problems with them do not let it worry you.

Usually smaller: In general, but not always, the palatine tonsils, (tonsils in the back of the throat) get smaller with age.  However there are many adults with a sleep disorder who have very large tonsils.  But as a rule, they tend to atrophy with age.  Certainly, we also know that their protective (immunological) function diminishes with age also.

Crypts of the tonsil: Most tonsils are the same size.  Asymmetry could signal an underlying disturbance.  What you appear to be describing is that one has more crypts than the other one.  Try gargling with warm salt water 3 to 4 times a day. If that Is not effective. Good luck

i have noticed my tonsils change shape regularly, new pockets are forming and they are changing constantly over the last 6 months. is that' normal?

Be examined: In the absence of an active infection of the tonsils and if they are not grossly enlarging in size, I don't believe this is a major problem.  To be safe, this should be examined by a doc and perhaps a throat culture should be done.  The tonsils are corregated in appearance normally and may change normally in shape from time to time, to a minor degree.

hi dr.i have swollen tonsil from the right side only and i don't feel any pain, and i realised it before 2 years and it is still the same.anything wrong?

Depends: Sometimes, a tonsil can appear enlarged on one side but is due to its lie within the tonsillar bed. Other times, it can be due to a serious condition. Have an ENT see it first. They will consider the physical examination and any other symptoms you may have.
