Cramping treatment: The use of Hypertonic Saline (hs) and d50w (dextrose) in the treatment of leg cramps during dialysis is based on their being able to raise the serum osmolarity (so). Sodium, glucose and BUN combine to form the so of a patient. As BUN is lowered during dialysis, the so falls and may cause leg cramps. By giving hs and d50w (dextrose), the so is increased with the alleviation of them.

Stop the Creatine!: Taking creatine for muscles is popular but potentially dangerous. Creatine can cause permanent damage to your kidneys even if you stop the creatine. So, it's better to NOT take creatine in the first place. You have diabetes, which can affect the kidneys, so creatine is even more dangerous for you. Drinking lots of water is best way to replenish electrolytes before and after weight training.

Find the cause and T: Muscle crams can be caused by many reasons, most often they are either due to electrolyte imbalance or unknown cause. stains(Cholesterol lowering medicines) can cause them.
try to find the cause of your Anemia and treat that first.
Two medicines can help(Quinine water) or CoQ10 supplements.

Leg cramps: Since we can only measure extracellular potassium and magnesium we can't be sure if intracellular levels are ok. That is why I still recommend trying a magnesium and/or potassium supplement. Your pharmacist can recommend one. Calcium deficiency can also cause recurrent muscle cramping. To prevent calf cramps, perform calf muscle stretching before bedtime. Tight muscles are prone to cramping.

I : I agree with dr. Jaffery.  Another consideration would be spinal cord irritation and a neurologic exam would be able to uncover that problem.

Before you visit the neurologist make sure to differentiate between "spasms", cramps, and restless legs.

Spasms respresent a painful and involuntary muscle contraction.  It can not be released voluntarily.

A muscle cramp is a sudden intermittent pain of a muscle that may involve involuntary contractions and can be associated with spasms.

Restless legs refers to an uneasiness and restlessness in the legs when at rest.  This most commonly occurs after going to bed but can be seen earlier in the evening (anticipation).

Cramps can also be associated with arthritic conditions and cold exposure.  I hope this helps.

my mom had a really bad leg cramp (both) during the night and i believe it was a charlie horse. it took a long time to go away. i gave her banana, heating pad, water, elevation, etc. if it happens again is there anything else that can help? thanks?

: You performed all the correct measures trying to provide comfort foul your mother. Now prevention is the next step.  Daily hydration with proper electrolytes  is now required. Sport drinks are helpful.  Stretching the muscles will help

Many reasons..: You may be dehydrated or over exercising. You may have a vitamin or mineral deficiency. See your doctor and have an evaluation.

Many: Not limited to men!  usually fatigue.  Could be due to medications taken.  Diuretics exacerbate this by causiing low potassium, magnesium and perhaps low calcium.  Poor hydration contributes to this.  If one has poor circulation to the lower extremities (pvd), leg crams can occur.  Sometimes we just don't know why they cramp.  You may be helped by some meds.  See your pcp and discuss.
