do melanoma causes black patches both side of the tongue? i have black patches on both side of the tongue from 6 years what it could be . i have no other symptoms rather than patches ? please answer properly i do use tobacco.?

: It is very unusual to have melanoma on the tongue however the best thing is to have a doctor evaluate and probably biopsy it to tell you what it is since different things like some bacteria overgrowth on the tongue could do that and you are right it is associated with smoking in some people. There other things like Puetz Jeghers Syndrome especially if it has been in your family.

whats the cause of a lump in the tongue.it looks like a normal tongue but when you pinch it a little hard pea sized bump is movable. im 16 no tobacco.

It depends. : Where on the tongue is the lesion? If it's on the side, it could be a traumatic lesion from biting. It's hard to say definitively without seeing it getting more information. Best option is to get a biopsy of it.

i understand that chewing tobacco is a cause of mouth cancer, but can use of methamphetamine also cause cancer in the mouth?

Short answer is yes.: Any irritant consistently applied to tissue can cause premalignant lesions that can later turn malignant. If you are abusing methamphetamines, then other systemic health problems may also ensue that are just as serious!  please call your physician, dentist or drug help line for help as soon as possible! don't ruin your life!

Get a dental exam: Bleeding gums are often the first sign of gingivitis.  Brushing too hard can also cause bleeding. Cigarettes and other tobacco products also may be causative. You need a dental exam as soon as possible.

Not Known, so Stop!: Tobacco causes cancer.  How much and when we don't know.  Not only do different people have different body types and differing resistance, but other factors also are important.  For example, alcohol consumption also adds to the risk of oral cancer.   Don't take a chance, don't use tobacco!

Likely related: Best would be to have your physician or dentist to evaluate and stop using tobacco for a while. Time will offer the exact answer to your question. If the lesion stays or grows your physician will also get a sense of its dynamics.

Known side effect of: tobacco on taste buds.  Food gets its flavor partially from taste buds on the tongue but also largely from our sense of smell.  Besides taste, tobacco can cause more harmful effects:  dental caries, gum disease and recession, halitosis, and more importantly, oral cancer, beginning with leukoplacia, or white patches on the tissue.  Make a decision to quit the habit now!  Your doctor can help.

: Absolutely you should be concerned, cancer detected and treated in the first 6 months has an over 80% survival rate, oral cancer detected after 6 months has an 80% mortality rate.  These are significant statistical differences. Please go and get checked immediately, and try to stop the habit.
