does developing tmj mean that you have reached your threshold for stress on your body? im pretty sure ive read that somewhere before. is that true? i suddenly developed it recently and i have had quite a few health problems over the last few years?

Yes: That is in fact the most common cause of bruxism, which leads to TMJ pain.  You would likely benefit from a bite splint or you could consider Botox which helps relax your chewing muscles.  I did Botox on myself for this and it works great.

Accepted Answer

Possible.: Mostly due to muscle facial pain, dislocation of tm joint, osteoarthritis.  Some belief maloclusion is a cause. Try joint rest (avoid excessive mastication), physical therapy (open & close in straight line), stress management, bite guards. Motrin. Otherwise, consult oral surgery.

Neck pain: Muscle spasm is a symptom of an overactive fight or flight system that is usually what we call stress. I suggest you look for modalities to decrease stress: meditation, yoga, acupuncture, massage, rolfing, feldenkrais. Consider seeing a chiropractor, too. Besides my work, consider seeing a therapist for talk therapy.

use moist heat on tmj pain or ice pack  for 30 min twice a day. i hoping this is just stress. could it just be temporary stress that is causing pain?

Perhaps: Could be. Try these things. Self treat with soft diet, jaw exercises, massage, heat/cold, OTC pain meds. A splint or physical therapy would be next. Occasionally muscle relaxants, biofeedback. Xrays are done for diagnosis. Surgery usually reserved for serious symptoms not responsive to other treatments.

how does a dentist or oral surgeon get treat tmj? do they get rid of the stress/anxiety causing it first? or would they treat it straightaway?

jaw finally seems be relaxing after  year long bout of tmj. there has been lot stress on ear muscles-muffled- but now deep in ear tickles. good sign?

Hmmm: Not sure, but if there is a question about hearing, you should get a hearing test.  I would recommend an evaluation by your doctor to be sure everything looks okay.

See pediatrician: Tell your mother that you would like to see a pediatrician. You can also feel free to tell her that you are uncomfortable with her making medical decisions for you in spite of her being a dentist. I agree with you that you should be examined appropriately and a diagnosis rendered appropriately.

Too Complicated : Tmj/tmd can be a symptom of stressful clenching or grinding of one's dentition. In stressful situations, many people develop these types of habits, causing undue pressure on the joint itself. Seeing a professional with experience in treating tmd/mfd is the best way to get relief.

what causes the back of your gums to get so sore? i have had all 4 of my wisdom teeth cut out15 yrs ago. i don't think it is my tmj bc i am not stress

Need more info.: when is it sore ....on its own or after eating ?   When you awake or at other times.  Your dentist will need answers to this to help you
