Your Dentist may treat you or refer you to another Generalist with expertise in treating joint dysfunction, or a specialist Oral Surgeon or Orthodontist, There is no specialty in Dentistry labeled "TMJ", just as there is no specialty in Medicine tabled "knee." Let your Dentist guide you along the correct path.

Anatomy vs symptoms: When i explain tmj/tmd to my patients, i tell them that everyone has TMJ (unless some type of mutation, cancer or accident.)  TMJ is the anatomy of the jaw joints- (t) temporal bone on upper maxilla; (m) mandible- lower jaw; (j) joints- where the two meet in a complex of tendons, ligaments, etc.  Tmd are the symptoms exhibited by someone who has a problem with the TMJ complex- locking, popping.

TMJ - Depends: 1) depends on the level of damage.   Tmj/muscle dysfunction problems are treated by a dentist.  Select a dentist that routinely treats TMJ with functional orthopedic type applicances. Many dentist treat tmj, however only about 5% are really good at it.

TMJ/TMD: It can get worse by just functions of the jaw- eating, chewing, yawning, singing, playing a musical instrument, trauma, yelling...Get the picture?  Even a slight popping over the years can slowly develop into a locking or limitation of opening or trouble closing the jaw. I would see a dentist or tmj/tmd specialist before it gets worse and becomes much harder to treat.

Physical medicine: A mouth guard or a retainer or an oral orthotic acts as a physical medicine device by improving the mechanics of the jaw joint and the jaw muscles. Some times it can make symptoms worse too; the retainer would need an adjustment by the dentist. You should consult an orofacial pain dentist for a comprehensive eval and management plan.
