Crowding: Extracting your wisdom teeth may make room for ortho to unravel your crowded teeth.  Ortho will help only, if in fact, uncrowding your teeth will help you tmj.

See an expert.: TMJ problems can be mild or severe. They can be temporary or long-term, related to another medical condition such as arthritis, possibly involve the bones or only the muscles, maybe just the nerves, or any combination.
It may be on one side or on both sides to different degrees.
Orthodontic treatment may trigger the onset of TMJ problems or aggravate it.  Its important to see someone experienced!

Yes : It is important that your dentist, orthodontist and oral,surgeon work closely together during your treatment.  Get your TMJ diagnosed  by an experienced dentist, prosthodontist or oral surgeon first as this will drive your treatment plan.

See a specialist: You may need to see a tmj/tmd specialist or get a second opinion.  Not all cases can be resolved, but hopefully can be improved upon.  Don't wait...You should be seen asap.

Custom Guard: Look for a dentist who has training in bite equilibration.  Pankey is a well respected school.  These dentists will know how to make you a bite guard to wear at night and help your TMJ situation. A physical exam is needed to determine your needs.  Surgery may also be recommended.

Complicated: Ideally the symptoms associated with joint pain would be addresses and relieved before starting tooth movement.

Sometimes: Talk to both your general dentist and your orthodontist about your TMJ issues before you start braces. This needs to be part of your treatment plan.   If  this is not discussed with the orthodontist  the braces may make your TMJ pain worse.

Braces/TMJ: The simple answer is yes. One it may make your TMJ/TMD symptoms better, or two it may make them worse. I would suggest you discuss this with your Orthodontist/Dentist, before treatment so you know what to expect. If you have already started treatment, bring this up with your Doctor so you can both follow this closely.

Positive effect: As malocclusion causative of, or contributory to, joint dysfunction, resolution of malocclusion usually means reduction of joint symptoms.  Ask a qualified orthodontic specialist for advice.
