over the past few days i have noticed a dark small spot on my iris. what is this and is this cancerous? it is round and symmetrical.

Iris nevus: Just have your eye doctor check it out for you, and noted on your medical record. So that it can be watched and monitored. It should be no problem for them to do so. Good catch!

i have a small brown spot on my iris and it hasnt always been there. i also have a huge mole with black specks on my hip/thig could these be melanoma?

Get both seen: If they're new, they're worth getting seen. Plus, this will get you into the habit of keeping a close watch on your skin.

Unlikely: Brushfield spots are a an accumulation of extra mid- iris pigment in a bundle seen in most often identified in patients with Down syndrome. What you describe does not sound like such a spot and I doubt you would be able to write out this question if you had DS. Have your doc look at it during your next visit. I don't think it is worth a visit by itself.

"OK" to be concerned: Iris nevi should be periodically assessed for growth as should any pigmented skin lesions. At your age melanoma iris risk is low. If pigment spot is significant i would recommend careful anterior segment photography to allow comparison over time. Iris melanoma's when they do occur are usually of the lowest grade of malignancy ; thus have a favorable prognosis if surgery is ever indicated.

Probably not: To be sure, please visit an ophthalmologist to have this looked at under the microscope.

Ophthalmologist: Your eye symptoms warrant an examination by an ophthalmologist. Floaters are often benign and a nuisance,but showers of them can be serious. I'm concerned about left eye pain and visual disturbance.

Possible ephelis: You may have small freckles (epheli) or moles (nevi) that are almost always benign. By the fact that you 'just' discovered them, A friendly visit to an EYE MD would be very reassuring to you. Good luck.

Pinguecula!: If it is on the white part of the eye (usually just nasal to the colored part) it is most likely a pinguecula, a   small growth caused by exposure to uv light and dry environment.  It may be pterygium, viral growth, infection, foreign body, etc.  See and ophthalmologist.

Exam: A brown spot on the eye with irritation might be a foreign body &amp; requires an examination. Don't try to remove it yourself. At the same time of the examination, if it's something different, appropriate treatment can be rendered. Make an appointment today.

Flashes ; floaters: The clear gel that fills eyeball is normally attached to all parts of the inside of the eye.  As we get older it can become more liquid (watery) and detaches from the back of the retina causing flashes ; floaters.  This can indicate a retinal tear. As the retina detaches, change or loss in your side vision is the next symptom.   You should see your eye doctor to check the retina.
