As I'm sure you: ...know, Accutane has many side effects.  The biggest concern in women of reproductive age is pregnancy b/c it can cause birth defects.  Exfoliating creams (such as Retin A) are a safer alternative for dealing with superficial acne, including whiteheads.  I recommend you discuss this with your dermatologist.  Best wishes.  Dr. Anne.

Whiteheads : Whiteheads and comedones are generally thought to start with plugs in the oil glands. These can be caused buy oil gland plugging, but they may be genetic in origin.  Your dermatologist will see them, extract them if necessary and tell you about treatments which can be very helpful.

hi i'm having 3 small rough skinned areas on my back are rash, with a lot of white heads all over them, and neosporin made it worse. not itchy but is warm and tender to touch. what could that be?

Rash: These could be of viral(herpes) origin). If new lesions appear only on one side of the back, get checked for shingles. In any event, a physician would have to inspect these eruptions in order to make a diagnosis. Treatment is available for viral(herpes) infections.

Likely reaction: This is likely to a makeup/lotion/soap or other agent that was in contact with those areas. If so it should fade within days if you do not re-apply the agent. You can test such agents by applying them to the pad of a band-aid &amp; applying that to clear skin. If it breaks out a day later your skin doesn't like it.

i'm worried that i might be developing a staph infection i recently got tattooed and over the last 24 hours i have been developing red sores that have become white heads in the middle. it started as one but now i have over 10 all in the area around my tat

I : I think you may be right.  Go see a doctor.  Topical antibiotics have a limited use, especially when treating mrsa.  You have to remember that antibiotics are not antiseptics.  They do not kill bacteria on contact.  They have to incubate with the bacteria to prevent the bacteria from having babies.  The only interaction a topical antibiotic has with bacteria is a thin surface area, and any "incubation" only lasts 20 minutes or so.  You should have these pustules cultured, and be taking an oral antibiotic.

You may also want to report your infection to the local health department.  If the tattoo place is not sterilizing their instruments, you'll be helping countless others by reporting them.

May be skin cysts: A little bump on the skin that has whitish stuff inside, but is not pus as in a pimple, is likely a skin cyst that contains skin oils and skin cells. A primary care doctor or a dermatologist can look at it to see what can be done. Sometimes, keeping the cyst empty for a while will allow it to shrink in size. On a penis, tiny permanent whitish bumps near hairs may be normal and not need removal.

Those sound like: cysts and the long white stuff sounds like keratin but you should not be picking and rather see a dermatologist for absolute diagnosis and treatment options

Probably not at this: Time. Wash face w gentle cleanser 2x/day ; use oil free products. No oily hair or heavy foundations. Exfoliate occasionally. Try not to pop pimples. Avoid touching face (cradling chin in hands). Remove makeup before bed. Shower after strenuous exercise. Consider otc products (salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide). If &gt; mild acne see dermatology (discuss meds, comedone extractor, pore strips, etc.).

Normal: There is no awkwardness here. This is a place where physicians respond.  This sounds like it could be normal. But, if you are that worried, please go see your gynecologist. This is what they do all day is to examine, explain, reassure, or treat as necessary.

Wash vigorously: Keep skin clean and dry with aggressive washing.  You can purchase a comedone extractor at any pharmacy to remove the ones you have.
