Not all GERD = burn: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (gerd) involves movement of stomach contents back into your esophagus. Gerd can be "silent" in a substantial # of patients, manifesting with ear/nose/throat &amp; lung problems without heartburn. Heartburn is the common presentation of burning discomfort in your chest with exposure of the esophagus to stomach contents. See earlier healthtap answers for gerd prevention.

Sliding hiatus: A sliding hiatal hernia may not always show up an Ultrasound. The hernia literally slides up and down, above then below the diaphragm muscle. Minimize or avoid tobacco , coffee, alcohol, NSAIDS, and eating large meals. Lose some weight (5%), avoid tight fitting clothing.  OTC and rx medications may treat the symptoms; severe conditions may require surgery to fix

Acid reflux: You may have an acid reflux. Get relief from your local pharmacy for oral meds and elevate the head of your bed when sleeping.
Avoid eating anymore three hours before you go to sleep.

GERD and HH:  Many people with acid reflux do not have a hiatus hernia. Also, many people with a hiatus hernia do not have symptoms of acid reflux. If you have a HH it does not necessarily mean that the sphincter between the oesophagus and stomach does not work so well. It is just that having a HH makes you more prone to having a poorly functioning sphincter and more prone to developing GERD.

: Yes. By definition, GERD is a disorder where a backwash of stomach acids (in liquid) travels up the swallow tube, irritating the tissue &amp; causing symptoms. A loose or weak closure of the stomach entrance is part of the cause. Caffeine weakens the closure and laying down after feeds adds stress to the stomach entrance. The stomach is a muscular organ that mixes food with contractions.

lying down when i get the sensation of  something low in my esophagus. my mouth waters and i feel i need to burp but can't. can last for an hour or +?

GERD: This is possibly gastroesophageal reflux disease (gerd) aka heartburn.  Here are some suggestions: stay upright for at least 1 hour after eating.  Eat small meals frequently.  Try zantac, (ranitidine) pepcid, or Prilosec to see if that helps (all of these are otc).  If symptoms still occur, see your doctor for further tests.

Dry Mouth?: Is it possible that you mouth became dry during your workout? Dry oral tissues have a tendency to feel tender and are more easily irritated. If so, I like a mild over-the-counter rinse called Peroxyl by Colgate. It should help soothe the skin.
