what would happen if someone stop taking their thyiord medicine for a while what would it do to their body?

Hypothyroid: Hi. as you probably are aware, thyroid hormone replacement treats but does not cure hypothyroidism (just like insulin treats but does not cure diabetes). If you stop taking thyroid hormone, you will have untreated hypothyroidism, which is seldom fatal, but can feel kind of crummy. Are you stopping just to see how you feel? Be willing to restart and keep your thyroid function normal. God luck!

Metabolism: Many times weight loss doesn't happen because your diet and exercise routine have actually slowed down your metabolism. Spread your meals out so that you eat 6 small meals a day. Make sure you do aerobic exercise at least an hour 5 times a week. If still can't lose weight time to go to a professional.

Common causes are iodine deficiency & selenium deficiency & also autoimmune thyroid diseases. Of interest, as i read a while back, president george bush & his wife barbara bush , both had goiter.

Hyperthyroid: Hyperthyroid means an overactive thyroid and can be caused by a number of conditions including inflammation (thyroiditis) but it does not usually go away on its own.  You should see your primary care physician who can refer you to an endocrinologist if they are not comfortable treating this.  There are medications that help but occasionally one needs radiation treatment.  See your physician.

Thyroid tests: Sometimes they are transient but if not get a free T4 or a free T3 (liothyronine) and a TSH to verify if it is really elevated and then have a doc correlate it clinically since it may be a lab error. Most cases are caused by hyperthyroidism which can come in several forms.
