Thyroid tests: Sometimes they are transient but if not get a free T4 or a free T3 (liothyronine) and a TSH to verify if it is really elevated and then have a doc correlate it clinically since it may be a lab error. Most cases are caused by hyperthyroidism which can come in several forms.

A nodule or Graves': One common cause of elevated thyroid hormone levels include a benign (non-cancer) tumor or nodule in the thyroid that is producing hormone. Another is an autoimmune disorder called graves disease, in which the thyroid is constantly turned "on" and producing hormone. President bush (the first) and his wife, barbara, both had this condition.
