Not thyroid: It would be very unusual for thyroid to be painful then non painful all within the course of a few minutes.  This is either esophageal or laryngeal spasm or muscle pain.

Mass effect: Pain is usually a clue that something in your anatomy isn't working quite as it should. The nodules can cause pain due to the mass effect of the increased size of the nodules. It needs to be evaluated

Occipital neuralgia: Involves the greater and lesser occipital nerves located in the back of the scalp and can produce neck pain as well as headache. Although there is no epidemiological data available, on is regarded as a common cause of protracted or severe headache.
Rec.: see a headache or orofacial pain specialist.

Tmj muscle pain: Muscle spasm. Try Motrin for pain. Another option is tmj.  A way to tell is to open and close the jaw with a finger placed in the TMJ socket which is roughly the pocket created when one opens the mouth and places a finger directly in front of the ear canal right at the level of the sideburns.  Softer foods, warm compresses and Motrin should help. Avoid gum chewing. If persists see md.

Pain: It is probably musculoskeletal if it has lasted for this long I would try and anti-inflammatory to see if you can get it to go away

Throbbing NOT= vein: If the pain is throbbing and you can feel that in your neck area, this suggests likely arterial--the carotid artery. I am not sure what other medical conditions you have and/or medications you are taking, thus difficult to advise you. If this is severe and persisting, I would recommend an evaluation. If sudden in onset, an arterial dissection (bleeding into the wall) is a possible cause.

No It Isn't!: There are several things that could be causing it most fairly simple but some that could be more troublesome. You should get an appointment to see your md as soon as you can & describe what is going on so they can check it out. Better to be safe!
