Constipation: See the Dr. as it sounds like you are constipated, and the large stool may have caused a laceration or even hemorrhoids to form, causing your bleeding.  Bleeding is never normal of course, so you do need to have an evaluation to be safe. Get well, best wishes.

my stool is frequently covered in white mucus. this is not unusual for me. however, i have just had a bowel movement covered in thick, brown mucus. does this mean that there is blood in my stool?

Stool test: It is not feasible to state if you have blood in your stool without examining your stool. Your doctor can order stool test to look for blood. Having more fiber and water in your diet may help.
You may take a fiber laxative like Metamucil and drink enough water daily so that your urine is colorless. For the long term you may try to increase your intake of fiber foods.

Blood in stools : Bright red blood usually caused by rectal bleeding usually hemorrhoids usually internal hemorrhoids which are not prolapsed.  Dark blood usually referred to as melena usually come from upper gastrointestinal bleed such as bleeding peptic ulcers.  More info therefor needed. Go seek medical help: If you are lightheaded and there is blood in your stools you need to go to the er to make sure your are medically stable. I had that once and it turned ours to be a bleeding ulcer. They can check your blood level and give you fluid to help your lightheadedness.
