Work.: The liver is a truly amazing organ.That we can abuse it with all the bad things we do and it keeps chugging along is remarkable.A healthy liver can handle the high fat&protein atkins diet is proof.But what happens after you quit the diet? Most of my patients have gained all plus some after the diet.Best "diet" for weight loss is weight watchers, followed by continued calorie restriction& exercise!

See below: you eat, meat, chicken, fish, nuts, cheese. You basically limit intake of sugar and carbohydrates such as grains, fruits and vegetables. You certainly wouldn't drink any sugar containing drinks or processed foods.

Lack of balance: The atkins diet does not promote a balance of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. We need all three, in proper proportions, for proper nutrition and health. Besides, if the atkins diet is so good, why did dr. Atkins die of a heart attack?

Weight loss: All diets, including the atkins diet, work as long as they are adhered to.  The problem with most diets is that they are a variance from the normal eating pattern and most revert to that even after losing the weight and so they gain the weight again. The atkins diet has some detractors but can work if done well.

Reasonable: To a point. Chief value is v.Low simple carbs, but "eat all you want of meat, fat encourages overeating.  On the whole, i despise diets in favor of simply eating "god made" food.

Very hard!: Nan, or indian bread is good, but forbidden.  Indian diets are heavy into rice, also to be avoided. Curries without rice, but with lamb, or chicken, and bell peppers, onions are very good.  Virtually all vegetables are good as well.  Sweet deserts, bread, and rice need be avoided.  This as made it difficult for many of my indian patients!

Maybe : It does result in weight loss however recent evidence suggest increased cardiac disease in patients on an atkins diet.

Diet + exercise: No diet would work by itself. Exercise is of paramount importance if the reason for the diet is weight loss. Otherwise, each and every diet is addressing specific metabolic pathways that might be tailored to your specific metabolic profile.

Accepted Answer

Olive oil: If you mean grabbing a cup of olive oil and drinking, the answer is no. That is not a balanced healthy diet, and neither is atkins. Eating lean protein is fine, but should be balanced with vegetables and fruit. Eating a bunch of fat (fatty meat, oil, etc) is not healthy. Atkins may make you lose weight, but it does so at the expense of causing other problems.

Yes: Atkins diet is nothing but a low carbohydrate diet, a  maximum of 60 gms of carbohydrate per day. The daily recommended intake of carbohydrates for a normal person is 200-300 gms per day.
