Sleeping pill: Temazepam (brand name restoril) is a sedating benzodiazepine tranquilizer, prescribed as a sleep aid.  Particularly useful when anxiety interferes with sleep, it is unfortunately habit-forming, and thus should not be taken repeatedly.  It also should not be taken with alcohol.  However, when used occasionally and in proper dosage, it is generally safe and effective.

choose to stop temazepam 30mg. so far with 1/2 dose, doing good. keeping busy, eating healthy, exercise regularly, 4 days have passed. can i decrease to 7.5mg starting day 5.? duration??? in # days to end medication?

: It could be more difficult when tapering below 15 mg but you can do it. You can take either 15 mg q other day or 7.5 mg daily for a 5-7 days then as needed only then.

my father 74 year old, take temazepam 15 mg every night. even when he don't need it. how long can you take temazepam and are any side effects for take this medication for a longtime period? more than a year. he has increased anxiety ect?

: It is likely that he is taking it for sleep, works relatively well, there are no issues with stopping or continuing unless having side effects or drug drug interactions, he might lose its sleep inducing effect. Best to clarify would be his current prescriber.

Not usually: Temazepam (restoril) is used as a sedative-hypnotic, for people with insomnia.  I've never heard of anyone using it for anxiety alone.  It can act in 30-60 minutes, and if you took it in daytime you could be asleep rather than merely calm!  so i wouldn't suggest doing that.  There are better choices for anxiety -- especially having a good evaluation so the best choices can be made.

Varies: figure 5 days minimum up to 1 week for  your urine to be clear, depending on age, weight and metabolism.

Restoril (temazepam): Is a capsule & should be ok if not expired.

when taking 45 to 60 mg of temazepam per night, how often do you recommend a drug "holiday"?  my doc was not specific.  i try for 1 week out of 4.

Drug Holiday: That is an issue that is best left up to your doctor.  Anytime a doctor is not specific or you don't understand or remember instructions then call the office and leave a message.  the doctor often will not call back, but the nurse or MA should call back and give you an answer.  So when you call be specific, don't say I have to talk to the doctor, ask your question, don't be embarrassed.

i have tried diazepam, zolpidem, zopiclone and now temazepam  and i am still not sleeping. why do these drugs have no effect? insomnia is debilitating

Stop the pills: Rather than taking another pill I think you need to step back and be evaluated for the diagnosis of insomnia. Your sleep pattern has to be analyzed  your blood needs to be drawn. There is a lot  of evaluation that must be done before the rare diagnosis of insomnia can be made. Start over

Temazepam: Depending on how many you took, mainly oversedation & GI upset.

Zolpedem: Temazepam and zolpimist (a form of ambien) are typical hypnotics that are used to help people fall asleep.  They generally help with sleep induction but not always with correcting a pattern of interrupted sleep.  It's best to also treat the underlying disorder, like osa, nightmares or a mood problem at the same time.  You should check with your doctor about this if your meds aren't helping enough.
