Typically safe: Dry needling is a technique typically very safe in the hands of an experienced clinician, often a physical therapist or chiropractor. There are many theories regarding how it can work. Although damage is very rare, some patients do have more pain and soreness for a couple of days after needling. Rest: In general treat early with rest, ice, compression and elevation.  Keep the knee relatively flexed.  Once you are out of the acute phase of the injury begin gentle progressive stretches.  Once you can stretch pain free...Usually a few weeks, then begin gentle progressive strengthening.  If you reinjur the muscle at any point, back up and start again.

Depends on grade: If gr. 1, treatment is ice, rest ; activity modification. Gr 2 means some muscle damage but no loss of continuity, same rx 4 a longer time 4-6 wks.Gr.3=significant tear of muscle  ; recovery is long, now months not was . If there is an avulsion of the attachments with boney involvement @ the knee or pelvis which becomes a surgical problem. 1 ;2 also use nsaids.

Strain.: It could be a hamstring strain, but the other thing it could be is sciatica, an irritation of the sciatic nerve. See a non surgical sports medicine specialist, who can make the diagnosis.

It can: If you make a conscience effort to fire the gluts while you skate it will.  Eventually you will train your body to do this on its own without having to think about it.  The abductors and adductors get a great workout with skating as well.

Hamstring Strength: Hamstring injuries are notoriously nagging injuries for athletes involved in explosive sports that involve sudden sprinting such as soccer, rugby, track & field, etc. Eccentric strength training of the hamstring has been shown to prevent hamstring pulls in elite soccer players. My recommended exercise to prevent hamstring injury is the eccentric nordic exercise.

Variable: There really is no way to clearly answer this.  A torn hamstring can occur typically during athletic activity, mostly sprinting.  And if you do suffer one, it can take some time to heal, not unusual for 3-6 mo till it feels normal again.
