In general, it's 4 : Years in college, four years in medical school, 5-6 years of general surgery and 2 or 3 years of plastics.  Currently, most plastics programs have tracks that involve a coordinated program of 3 years of general and 2-3 years of plastics.  There are many other ways to get there thru other specialties as well.

What to look for: A good start would be to seek out a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon.  The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has a search tool at www.plasticsurgery.org. Also word of mouth recommendations are helpful from other patients.  Meet with a surgeon and make sure you are comfortable with them.  It doesn't hurt to meet with more than one as well.  Good luck!

Cheek projection: Enhancement of the cheek to have more definition and projection can be done several ways. Surgically, cheek implants can be placed through an incision in the mouth. Also, fillers can be used to fill up the area creating more fullness. Fillers are not permanent and last a defined period of time depending on type of filler. Fat, hyaluronic acid, calcium phosphate are examples of several fillers used

Improve, not remove: You can never remove a scar, once present. However, multiple options for improving the appearance of acne scars exist.  Depending on your skin and exact circumstances your facial plastic surgeon or dermatologist may recommend laser treatments (including co2, 1550 nm erbium), peels, dermabrasion, or well as topical treatments.   Seek a physician with experience.

Ointments are Ok: Antibiotic ointments are a reasonable topical treatment for open wounds.   Scar modification creams are not.
