If it hurts your: chest when you take a breath, then yes it can cause that.  Any muscle strain in the chest and back area will have the same effect.  However there are other things that can mimic muscle strain, including bad things like blood clots in the lung (pulmonary embolism), pneumonia, aortic aneurysm and heart attacks.  Be sure to visit your healthcare provider to make sure these conditions are ruled out.

Many: Chest pain, pain when you move you arm, could even be pain when you take a deep breath. Pain when you push on your chest or under your arm. Pain when you move. You can have weakness if really bad and trouble lifting or trouble moving the arm on the affected side across the body. Don't worry. Just follow your drs advice

Electrolyte : Alterations in your electrolytes through loss in sweat may be the cause.  Try drinking fruit juice with a small amount of added salt. Drink enough water so your urine is mostly colorless. If the symptoms persist for more than 2 weeks, it would be prudent to seea doctor.

For ex: a young man who does upper body weight lifting may strain his pectoralis muscle, causing fleeting sharp pain.  See doc if pain is associated w/shortness of breath, or palpitations, lasts longer than a few minutes, or increases in frequency or intensity, or does not resolve.
