Blocked kidney: We look at BUN and Cr when evaluating kidney function.  If a kidney stone is blocking the flow of urine (obstructing) and resulting in abnormal kidney labs, the stone should be dealt with by a urologist.  Lithotripsy uses sound waves to break up stones.  A stent can also open up the blockage and help relieve pressure on the obstructed kidney.

Ultrasound can miss a kidney stone due to its location or size; however, it can detect the *effects* of a kidney stone, by which diagnosis is made.
