Yes, depends on seve: If the blockage is complete & urine backs up into the kidneys, you can get a condition called hydronephrosis. This can be detected on ultrasound due to the dilation of the ducts in the kidneys (like stepping on a garden hose- water backs up & bulges). Ultrasound can miss a kidney stone due to its location or size; however, it can detect the *effects* of a kidney stone, by which diagnosis is made.
