Carotid stenosis: Exposure to radiation, usually in the treatment of cancer, is a known cause of stenosis.   It doesn't occur in all cases but it can occur.

No: Keep trying to be healthy. Please don't smoke. The blocked vessel is unlikely to get better without procedure like stent or surgery.

Its not minor: A carotid endarterectomy is a major operation but is usually well tolerated. In the hands of a well trained vascular surgeon the risks can be minimalized. Nationally the rate of stroke around the time of the surgery is less then 3% for vascular surgeons. Heart issues is one of the most common complications but is usually treatable. Death is rare less then 1% but can occur.

Yes: Blockages in the arteries providing blood to the arms are common. Most often these blockages don't cause any symptoms. It is good to be aware of them as they can give you a false low blood pressure. A simple way to test this is to check the arm pressure in both arms. The higher pressure is the accurate one. A 20mmhg difference is considered significant. An ultrasound can give a more accurate diag.

Not typically: Arteries with plaque build-up and blockage are not typically able to picked up or discovered just by feeling the artery. Oftentimes an artery can be blocked and still have a pulse. An ultrasound is often the least invasive and most cost-effective way to detect blockage in the neck arteries.

Carotid stenosis: This is a progressive, slow disease process of atherosclerosis. It means nothing without the context of age, risk factors, and history of TIA/CVA. Treatment options include medicinal (aspirin, plavix, etc). Surgery is carotid endarterectomy. A vascular surgeon would be helpful.

had a muscle biopsy done saying i have denervation and neurogenic changes in right arm. i have symptoms of pressure, tightness, numbness in right side of my neck and head. im wondering if my carotid artery could be narrowed. could these be related?

: Don't think this is carotid disease narrowing but it could be a cervical neuropathy.  You young for carotid artery narrowing.  Easiest way to be sure is have your PCP listen for what is called a carotid bruit with his stethoscope.

i've had a pain in the left-side of my neck, which extends slightly to my left shoulder & the top of my arm, for 3 weeks. it is only noticeable when i am in certain positions & there have been no other symptoms. i am in my late 60s.  please advise!

Radiculopathy: You may have a bulging intervertebral disc or  arthritic spur pressing on a nerve root in your lower neck. An MRI would be helpful in diagnosing your problem. You could try wearing a soft neck collar if there's significant pain on neck motions. A neurologist can evaluate you and order appropriate tests and discuss treatment options like physical therapy with traction depending upon the findings
