Initially yes: If your problem is acute ice is the way to go you might also try advil (ibuprofen) r naprosin 
after 24hrs heat may help
if pain persist.... See your hand surgeon.

Osteomyelitis: Two blood cultures and monitor for fever. Start antibiotics after culture. Obtain a MRI.
Infection is one possible cause.

Finger infection: I am sorry to hear about your mother's pain, and symptoms. She is at increased risk for infections due to diabetes and being on dialysis. Symptoms of swelling and pus drainage sound consistent with a nail bed infection, however swelling of the entire finger with pain sound as though an infection could be spreading. A medical professional should evaluate the finger as soon as feasible.

: There is no such thing as drosophila (fruit fly) infection -- you're confusing the name with something else. If some sort of infection is known as the cause and it's not responding to prescribed treatment, consider consultation with an infectious diseases specialist. Suspect a sprain...: If it is in the middle joint of your middle finger (that was in the bowling ball, ) it is probably sprained. If that is what, in fact, it is, expect it to be swollen and sore for a number of months; perhaps more than a year, so be patient...It should slowly improve.

Finger pain/swelling: finger pains with swelling may indicate joint inflammation.  If you have other symptoms such as redness and fever, however, you may have an infection as well and should see your doctor asap.  If it's just inflammation, usually a medication like Advil or Aleve (naproxen) taken for a few days will help.  Also a cold/ice pack and rest will help with the pain/swelling.

Probably not.: As long as she can bend and straighten her finger fully without severe pain, it is probably just a bruise. Ice it  at least 3-4 times a day.
