Q: i have noticed some swollen lymph node on my neck lately and have tested negative for hiv with 4th generation lab test at 6 months should i retest or seek other reasons for this? just trying to get some proper information since the web is everywhere?

: You did not get HIV from the episode 6 months ago. You may feel the nodes every couple of weeks, if any of the lymph glands doubles in size, becomes painful, ulcerates, or other nodes become enlarged, or you develop fever, or lose weight, you should see a doctor. Wish you good health!

Q: bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) turned one swollen lymph node into numerous ones. blood labs came back normal. going to get biopsy tomorrow. any suggestions?

Biopsy: A biopsy is very reasonable given your history. Many different types of biopsies are available. You could have an excisional biopsy where a surgeon removes a lymph node or an fna where a small number of cells are removed via a slender needle or you could have a core biopsy (uses much larger needle). As a pathologist i prefer to see an excisional biopsy or a core. Good luck. Let us know result.

Q: does lymphoma present with symptoms? swollen lymph node pea size x7 months. normal labs, ct & chest x-ray. somewhat tired, occasional itching.

Node biopsy possibly: A persistent swollen isolated node for seven months may be related to a number of causes. I would suggest a visit with your PCP. Sometimes infections and drainage to the affected lymph node is the underlying cause rather than malignancy. If the node needs to be biopsied then a surgical referral can be made. Small moveable nodes tend to be benign. Tissue diagnosis is usually quite definitive.

Weight loss?: In all honesty, the low TSH could suggest hyperthyroidism, which in turn could explain the weight loss. However, I’m not pleased with the lymph nodes. You should really get an a evaluation and perhaps get the lymph nodes biopsies for diagnosis, just to be sure.

Q: bw said reactivated mono. wbc 10.9, lymph 12.3%, gran 79.8%, anc 8.7%. labs normal 3 weeks ago. body/joint aches, tired, neck sore, swollen lymph nodes, mild night sweats. oncologist.confident with mono diagnosis. should i be concerned for leukemia?

No concern: An oncologist is the right person to have the most reliable answer, with the greatest understanding of risks of leukemia and its diagnosis. You can rely on her/his advice.

Unlikely: Lymphatic system absorbs/carries things too big to go into the arteries/veins like bacteria eaten by white cells and digested food. Lymph nodes "taste" the lymph for anything bad like bacteria/viruses/cancers, etc. When it detects a problem, it alerts the immune system and your body reacts. They enlarge in response to the inflammation they create when they react. They shrink when all is well.

Lots of explanations: Reasons for enlarged lymph nodes are many.  Some benign, some serious.  Could be viral, allergies, infections, cancers, ect.  I would recommend getting one biopsied since they have been persistent for so long and now you have more.  See your doctor or a surgeon.
