Not to worry: The swelling is likely a manifestation of the hsv-1 (canker sore) problem itself. The medication can cause irritation but the swelling is most likely due to the canker sore itself. If it continues to get worse seek a doctor's evaluation for a possible overlying bacterial infection or alternative diagnosis.

Aphthous ulcers: These are white with red rims and most likely on inside lips, cheeks, palate, tonsils.  Can be triggered by stress and may take 7-10 days to heal.  Can become much less painful with steroid rinse such as 10ml of 40 mg/ml kenalog (triamcinolone) mixed into 1l saline.  1tsp rinse and spit 3-4 times daily until pain gone.

Hello, : Hello, our lymph system drains germs, old blood cells and other "junk" in the body. There are a number of lymph nodes on the jaw and on the neck, that help to drain the mouth. Lymph nodes usually aren't felt. However, when they become inflammed (like working double time with a canker sore) then they can become enlarged and tender.  It is not uncommon to have swollen lymph nodes with  canker sores.

Canker sores: There are many causes for canker sores, e.g. Allergy, virus infection, chemical irritants in toothpaste or mouthsores from irritations, etc.  They are usually self limiting.  Perhaps keep a journal of what you eat or your activities to try to see if anything you notice brings on the canker sores.

Best 2 see a Dr.: Or dentist or oral surgeon when you have the lesions so they can be seen by the provider. If not possible get a clear (not fuzzy, out of focus) picture to show. Some times mouth sores can be from viral infections, sometimes extra b complex vitamins help.
