i had a root canal that resulted in swollen jaw and a fever of around 100. i started on 300mg of clindamycin t.i.d. will that bring the fever down? i also had a gum boil which got drained.

See a dentist: Most often, an infection should be evaluated by a health provider. Any abscess will heal more quickly once drained, because antibiotics won't get into an area without blood supply.  For that reason there is a higher risk of complication or spread of infection to other areas if this is not performed. In particular, the bacteria in a serious dental infection can affect the heart valves.

can an unfinished root canal cause a jaw infection? it doesn't  hurt, just feels odd when i  touch the swollen bone? not sure  if it's  bone.

Healing: Remember if you cut your finger, it does not heal in 5 days.  You have not given yourself time to heal.  Please give it at least 2 to 3 weeks.  The numbness can take even longer.  If it does not heal, then go back to the dentist.

Seek Help ASAP: Need to have swelling incised ; drained by your dentist, endodontist (rc specialist), oral surgeon or in emergency room. When these infections enter the fascia (the layer between the muscle and bone) it can spread fairly quickly ; may become life threatening. In the meantime, if u have ab prescribed by a doctor for this tooth, take them, ice the area, put an extra pillow, don't sleep on that side.

Something's Amiss: Was the root canal just started last week, or was it finished? Radiographs don't always show everything... the tooth may have a periodontal pocket, an additional canal, or even a fracture. Infection is always a possibility. If your dentist is stumped, she should refer you to an endodontic specialist and/or an oral surgeon for further care.

Possible reinfection: You could be exhibiting signs of an infection under the tooth in the bone.  Call your dentist.  Once he has determined the source, which tooth, the infection can be controlled with antibiotics.  When you are comfortable and more apt at making a good decision, you can look at options to correct problem.

Follow up : It's difficult to clarify with little information however it is not uncommon to have some pain and even swelling following some root canal procedures. Your Flagyl will likely help reduce infection. You may continue to be numb following anesthetic but if it lasts for more than a day you should call your doctor, it's best to review with them what to expect given the procedure they competed for you.

Facial Swelling: No, your cheekbone should not be really swollen after a root canal. You may have an infection, an abscessed tooth. Return to see the dentist or endodontist who performed the root canal. If you're not on antibiotics, you probably should be. Sometimes an infected upper back tooth can lead to a sinus infection as well, or vice versa. Be careful...This could lead to a serious facial infection.

is it normal for lip to be swollen after root canal?

Can happen, but: Your lip can feel swollen from the novacaine for awhile and this is normal.  If there is an infection you can have swelling and this should be treated with an antibiotic by your dentist or endodontist.  Call them if there is swelling  or if it is getting worse.

is a dentist suppose to start the process of performing a root canal without draining the abscess if it's swollen the cheeks?

Yes, of coarse: The only way to cure a dental abscess is with dental treatment. The treatments are: root canal treatment, tooth extraction and/or in some cases, drainage surgery. The treatment for this type of abscess is normally root canal treatment. Hope it helps.
