Gum disease: Swollen gums often indicate gingivitis.  However, with good, regular dental care, you're gums should become healthy and stop bleeding so easily and stop being swollen. Floss daily, brush after meals, consider a water pik, and see your dentist regularly. If you follow this and still have problems, talk with your dentist about other considerations.

Temporary measures to relieve pain include salt water or antiseptic mouthwashes, nsaids like ibuprofen, and orajel. But the real answer to the problem is to have the wisdom teeth removed. This is a very common and straightforward operation done by an oral surgeon that is usually very well-tolerated.

Extraction: Pericoronitis is a condition when gum surrounding the tooth is inflamed.  It occurs frequently in the area of wisdom teeth, when a partial erupting posiiton causing inflammation and trauma to the gingiva (due to plaque collected, poor oral hygiene, and traumatic occlusion in the area).  Extraction would be a definitive treatment.  Good brushing and antibiotic is only for temporary relief.

Swollen gums : Many times this is just a temporary thing if the gums have been irritated by the procedure. We usually recommend using a warm salt water rinse for a couple of days and brush gently after meals. You can take something over the counter for the pain such as motin, aleve, or tylenol (acetaminophen). If this pain and discomfort continues go back and see your dentist to have a closer look.

Yes: Immediately after there will be inflammation from the procedure especially if it had been awhile since your last cleaning.  Make sure to keep brushing and flossing even when it is sore.  A few days it should be gone.

Erupting or ?: You may or may not have enough room for your wisdom teeth to erupt.  You may have swollen gums from the normal eruption of your wisdom teeth, or an infection, pericoronitis (inflammation) or food impaction. See a dentist to determine the cause and advice as what to do.  Take some otc pain medication and rinse with salt water in the meantime.

Drs : Drs zweig and mcleod have given you good advice. Sometimes the gum is irritated from the cleaning, sometimes a bit of calculus may have lodged in the space between the gum and tooth, causing an inflammatory response.

Regarding the dentist you are currently seeing... The choice is yours. You should feel comfortable with the person who is treating you. If you were, you wouldn't be asking for our advice... You would have called him first.
