Dr. can check throat: Throat discomfort can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep throat). Throat lozenges and Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin can help decrease throat pain.

This is an infection typically of a unilateral tonsil which presents with one sided throat pain radiating to the ear and there may be swollen glands on the side of the infection.  Other possibilities could be neoplastic (cancer).

It may be a viral : Tylenol, (acetaminophen) salt water gargles and hot liquids give symptom relief. If you have a fever over 101 or white patches on your tonsils you may need a throat culture (rapid strep test) or a blood test for MONO
