Local reaction: Local reactions at the injection site with redness and swelling are the most common side effects.  If it persists or worsens, despite local care (ice to area, tylenol (acetaminophen) or motrin, etc) then seek medical attention for an evaluation.

Reaction: The MMR contains measles, mumps, and rubella and they are live viruses. You may be having a very mild case of mumps as a result. Hard to know exactly without a visit.

NO: MMR vaccine goes into the subcutaneous tissue (fat) of the arm, not into the muscle. That is why you felt that sensation. Air bubbles are only dangerous if large ones are injected directly into the blood stream. No cause for concern.

my son 8 has very swollen areas around the front side and back of his ear. woke up now with it crying that it is painful. i gave him neurofen. looks like mumps but weve been isolating for over 3 weeks now and hes had mmr vacine. what could it be?

Parotitis: The mumps is one cause of swelling &amp; pain within that gland. Other viruses &amp; some bacteria can also. Retention of stones within the ducts can trigger swelling sometimes. If he is not running much fever you can monitor for now but a call to his doc would be the next step.

Won't hurt: We have seen a recent rise in measles cases imported by international travel, (Houston,Ohio).As such, it is reasonable for anyone with an unsure history or who was born prior to 1990 to have a dose. Prior to 1990's we give only one dose of MMR at a yr and about 15% of the population remained at risk.Second doses were given to many into their teens at that time but many were missed.

The MMR is 3 vaccines in 1,getting a 4th at same time is unwise.

Unlikely mumps: There are 4 possibilities.This could be an unrelated likely viral illness triggering the glands to swell. It could also be a mild reaction to one of the 3 weakened viruses that are in that vaccine. I like the 2nd option as I find one of the measles viruses can trigger symptoms about 10 days out. If it is the vaccine I consider it good evidence that it will work as hoped. The symptoms should pass

Hard to say : From the description of the pain the injection may have come close to a nerve. I would expect the effect to resolve within 3 days as it likely relates to local swelling at the injection site, not the vaccines themselves. I wonder about the technique used as these are usually given in sites that avoid those structures.
