my right gland in neck is always swollen, gets worse when i have a cold but i can always feel it there. last 2 days stiff neck and more swollen, normal?

Slight infection: The glands in your neck are lymphatic glands.  Lymphatics basically take the fluid between the cells and send them to glands with white blood cells.  If the white blood cells find an infection (virus, bacteria) they multiple and your gland gets bigger. So during a cold the glands can get bigger.  This is normal.  If you are concerned you could go to your doctor and he/she can check by feeling them

i have a stiff neck right side for awhile now can the strain. cause swollen lyph nodes on that same side?

Not likely: Swollen lymph nodes are not typically caused by a muscular strain; they usually represent your bodies response to infection or inflmation.  If you have had persistent swollen lymph nodes on the side of the neck, a good medical check up would probably be a good place to start to be evaluated.

i had a headache yesterday during the day. this morning i woke up with what i thought was a stiff neck but it looks like a swollen and painful lymph node. please advise. i am away for a workshop out of town and will return to pretoria on saturday. ?

Lymph node: At this time I would regard this as an early viral infection and treat with rest, adequate fluid intake, Tylenol for aches or fever. Upper respiratory tract symptoms may follow. Return of significant headache, high fever and chills, rash, or deep productive cough would warrant a visit to a hospital emergency room or clinic for prompt evaluation by a physician. Lymph nodes should regress.

i woke up with a stiff neck and shoulder muscle. my worry is why it was swollen up? is that normal??

Shoulder pain: Clearly this is not "normal". You have injured yourself somehow. Perhaps you were lifting something that was too heavy for you ar you repeatedly exerted yourself to 100% with the shoulder and have and overuse problem. Ice it 20 minutes 4xday, take some anti-inflammatory (ibuprofen 600mg 4x day) and rest it. If its not better in a week OR it gets worse (Red/hot/more painful) see a doc.

Hard to say: Your swelling concerns me the most. Whole-body swelling can be caused by heart-failure, liver damage, kidney failure, and certain medications, among other causes. With the combination of neck pain and swelling, nothing specific comes to mind. Please see a provider who will do a good physical exam and ask you more questions to try to figure this out. You deserve an answer!

Throat infection : The group of symptoms listed can form a cascade. Tonsils can be swollen from infection, possibly viral or bacterial. Referred  pain from the throat to the ears is common, so the ears hurt. When there is an infection in the throat, lymph nodes in the neck would swell, which may become sore, and cause the neck to feel stiff.

Possible lymph nodes: Tonsils are lymph nodes--the structures that hold many cells of our immune system. They can get enlarged as a response to infection. There are glands in the neck often called 'swollen glands' when enlarged, so often the two go together and both can feel sore if inflamed. Strep throat and many viruses can cause this. Cancer is rare for what you describe, but i strongly recommend seeing your doctor.

Viral infection: and musculo-skletal pain. An upper respiratory tract infection or a cold can inflame your cervical lymphonode. It gradually goes down after your cold or URI is over. The neck and shoulder pain could be due to sleeping on your left side.  Take advil (ibuprofen) for the pain. It can take up to 10 days to get over the pain.

i've developed a stiff neck on the right side along with a swollen lymph node and other symptoms, could this be an infectious disease?

Possible: It is possible that an infectious disease present itself this way ( scrofula= TB infection of lymph node of neck, hiv, ect...) may present this way , other non infectious diseases may present this way also,  you should see your doctor for further evaluation.
