Not long usually.: If the  doses are equivalent then there should not be discontinuance symptoms.  If the doses are  not equivalent, then you  could have recurrence of symptoms or  you could have side effects from too high a dosage.  3-7% of the population cannot  make the switch easily due to different metabolic rates of these two  medications. You  need to bring your  symtoms to  your  doctors attention.

None: There should be no side effects caused by the switch per se. Since each person has different sensitivities, you may experience a side effect on zoloft you did not experience on lexapro, (escitalopram) where someone else experiences side effects on Lexapro (escitalopram) but not on zoloft. Usually side effects to these drugs are mild and transitory. Talk to your doctor about any discomfort you experience.

Not necessarily: If your doctor is changing your medication, it may be because it wasn't serving your needs?  Usually changes are made when people's symptoms don't respond, and better results are needed.  I wouldn't expect there to be a "down cycle" unless Lexapro (escitalopram) was helping you more than you realized, and zoloft not so much -- or higher dose is needed.  Please contact your prescribing doctor about this.

Zoloft to Lexapro (escitalopram): Making the change from Zoloft to Lexapro (escitalopram) should not be too difficult as long as it's done under a doctor's supervision.  You will essentially reduce the daily dose of Zoloft while you increase the daily dose of Lexapro (escitalopram) as your doctor instructs you.  You will continue this titration until you are totally off the Zoloft and only on your final daily dose of Lexapro (escitalopram). The process might take 2-3 weeks.

Not any more common: Dizziness is not any more common an effect than it is for zoloft.  If you didn't have the effectin zoloft it is likely that it will not occur on lexapro (escitalopram).

Possible: Dizziness is one of the common side effects of lexapro (escitalopram). Dizziness is mentioned as a common side effect of a lot of psychiatric and non- psychiatric medications. Fatigue and somnolence is experienced by a lot of patients, who are on lexapro (escitalopram). Thanks.

Cross titration: Zoloft and Lexapro (escitalopram) are both metabolized by the same pathway.  As such, a cross titration is usually recommended to avoid any adverse effects.  As a side note, that's a pretty low dose of Zoloft -- so you might not achieve an adequate response.  If this happens, don't hesitate to increase the dose (with your doctor of course). Start Lexapro (escitalopram): While still on the zoloft . I usually have someone start  on a small dose of the Lexapro (escitalopram) and increase it gradually while at the same time, taper down even more slowly  on the zoloft. Each new antidepressant essentially has to start over again and needs time to work. Therefore you don't want to go off the zoloft too quickly, you may find out it had been doing much more for you than you had thought.

Accepted Answer

This varies: A common way would simply be to start 10 mg Lexapro and after a week or two, reduce Zoloft to 25 mg for 1-2 weeks, then stop.  Depending on side effects and clinical symptoms, your doctor may modify to faster, slower, or a different medication.  Drug interactions with other medications would also need to be screened.
