SS Band allergy?: It&#x27;s more likely physical irritation and plaque accumulation although some individual may have a soft tissue reaction to foreign materials such as stainless steel bands. This should be discussed with your Orthodontist who can determine what&#x27;s going on in your particular case and make suggestions and\or modifications if necessary.

Yes: Wearing braces can be very challenging. Check with your dentist and make sure you also keep up with regular brushing and flossing to keep things meticulous.

Not normal if health: If you are healthy, then it is not normal. Better hygiene is essential to stop the condition. Rarely there are allergies to the metal in the brackets or the latex in the elastic. Talk wih your orthodontist and his staff for tips.

Get a cleaning: Sounds as if you aren't keeping the area as clean as possible   also the band may be irritating the gum and keeping food particles there
see your dentist to evaluate what is happening and show you what you have to do to control the problem.

What to do: The symptoms you describe could be from any number of causes. In order to diagnose the problem and treat the cause, you need to see a dentist as soon as possible. In the meantime take some OTC pain medication- Advil, Motrin, Aleve or what you would normally take for a headache. Rinse out with some salt water and stick to soft foods. Feel better soon.

i just got my braces removed yesterday. i was warned i may experience swollen gums after removal. they are not tender or bleeding just swollen. any tips and tricks to reduce swelling besides flossing and brushing?

: Swollen gums result from either mechanical irritation or infection. Make sure you are using a soft toothbrush and simple toothpaste without whiteners or other irritating ingredients. Rinse well and avoid acidic foods. The swelling should go down in a few days.

Should not: If your gums are swollen around your braces that have been on for a while (more than a couple of weeks), it may be that you are not keeping the gums clean enough. It is important to have good brushing and flossing habits while in braces. Ask your orthodontist to evaluate your efforts.

Yes: With or without braces the gum will swell locally, around the erupting tooth. Braces can only make it worse if you are not diligent with your oral hygiene because of the braces. So, yes and no.

Orthodontist: Please speak to your orthodontist. As discussed in my prior answer to a similar post you made, since there is less space between your teeth, the gum tissue has been compressed in that area. Over time things should be fine. Great oral hygiene will help.

Infection: Probably gum infection, or could be abscessed tooth.  Get back to the orthodontic  specialist asap b before it gets worse.  Orthodontist may have to refer you back to your dentist for rx, or on to a periodontist or an endodontist.
