Swelling: there are a number of things that can cause swelling in this area and you need to see a dentist for an exam to find out what is going on in your mouth. This is more likely an infection that needs to be treated and not the herpes.

Pain on tongue: You can try to gargle with salt water for swelling.  Drink plenty of fluids and rest.  Try to recall what happened to make your tongue sore and avoid that in the future.  If it persists more than a week pr if you have fevers, bleeding, difficulty breathing then see your doctor.

Get checked: Without knowing more about your  health and habits it's impossible to say what is causing your "glossitis." most minor things are self limited and go away in a week or two.

Whiteness tongue: If the white areas on the tongue are like cottage cheese and wipe off and under them is a reddish base, you could  have candida  oralis. This can be easily treated with an antifungal.   Reflux would have other symptoms like acid brash (acid taste on the throat after eating when you burp and you almost throw up acidic fluid). Try brushing your tongue both sides and the top (dorsum).  Might help.

i keep experiencing swelling under my jaw (sometimes on both sides) and tingling in my mouth and on my tongue. it goes away and comes back. sometimes it happens when i eat and other times it just happens randomly. i also think i might have tmj?

Perhaps if we had more specific information as to your description of the problem, what types of doctors you've seen and what they said, we could give you a better answer. Having said that, the only other advise I could give you would be to go to a local dental school for an evaluation.

Possible TMJ: syndrome: an inflammation of the temero-mandibular jount, where the lower jaw ( mandible) insets into the skull ( temporal bone ). Usually will respons to oral antiinflammatory meds ( if not allergic ), mouth guards/appliances and/or local injections.
