sausage like swelling after back fusion l5 and s1. however, previous fusion from l5 to l1. old fusion included in new one by replacing the rods. after 7 weeks i still have a sausage like swelling on my spine.  how long is normal to have this swelling?

Possible blood clot: Usually a pinched nerve in the back does not cause leg swelling.  You could have a blood clot.  This needs immediate attention by a doctor. It can be fatal if a blood clot in the leg breaks off and goes to the lung.

Unlikely: It would be rather unusual to see swelling in your leg because of compression of a nerve in your back. Is their swelling your calf? If so, that would raise the possibility that you might have some type of obstruction of the vein bloodflow in your leg.  There are some simple noninvasive test that can tell if there's any blockage of the blood flow return in your leg. Call your doctor and review your situation with him to determine if these test should be done or not

Spondylitis: There can be several cause but spondylitis is high on the list in a young male. See a rheumatologist for this issue.

i have a sacrilized l5, also spondylolethesis between l4 and l5. i'm in pain all of the time, i walk and it hurts my legs are curving and my calves are shrinking and they are swelling. i've had the epidural when should i consider surgery?

: Sounds like you have a very intricate and difficult diagnosis. However, if you wish to try to start walking and having difficulty doing so you might want to seek the  help of a podiatrist who is knowledgeable in bio mechanics.  They might be able to help relieve stress on your lower back   It is non surgical and  everything to gain

lower back in excruciating pain.can't stand more than 30 mins.mri showed facet hypertrophic changes, joint swelling l1-l5. could this be causing pain?

Yes: You should probably see a spine specialist for a full evaluation of the MRI and your symptoms.  If your pain does not resolve you may be a candidate for facet joint injection or even radiofrequency ablation of those nerves for longer lasting relief.  However before assuming this is what you need i would ask you to be truly evaluated as there could also be a disc issue or pinched nerve involved.

2 back surgeries in ~1 month. wondering if increased swelling@l5-s1 from overdoing it could cause severe burning/cramping pain behind knee, in calf/ankle, & thigh? have to lie down & hard to walk/sit.

Yes: Overdoing so soon after back surgery can cause nerve irritation which will result in symptoms the you descibed.  You have to take frequent break and lie down to get relief. Good Luck

Assessment: Needs to be assessed. MRI might help. Would followup with your physician. Is the pain in a different area from before surgery?

can you have osteochondroma on your l5?

Yes: Osteochondromas usually occur around the knee. They are rare, but do occur in the spine. When they do , they usually occur in the neck. So an osteochondroma arising from L5 is quite rare, but a described entity.
