Hard to say: It is hard to say, there are many potential causes.  It is unusual to have a spine related complaint in and of itself, so it is a little more likely it is something in the area.  A bursa is a structure that can be inflamed and swollen in the area,  an abcess can also cause atraumatic swelling.  I would encourage you to be checked.  Thank you for the question.

A lipoma: A lipoma is a benign medical condition. There is no need for a treatment. However, if the lipoma concerns you, is painful, infected or is growing, you may want to have it removed and biopsied.

i will get swelling at the base of my neck between my shoulders and directly where the spine is. it will swell up to the size of a golf ball, cause a horrible headache and then go away. 
ive had an x-ray that said it was clear. any ideas?

Symptoms: I have some thoughts, but this isn't my field. Concerned that you may be leaking cerebra-spinal fluid. Suggest that you consult with a Neurologist as soon as possible. Try to make arrangements in. advance to be seen when the swelling is obvious.

i had an mri done if my cervical spine and they put minimal cerebellar ectopia measuring 2mm should i be concerned?
base of neck has been swelling with bad headaches?

Likely unrelated: The cerebellum structures are usually contained within the skull but occasionally the cerebellar "tonsils" are found a slight bit below the level of the skull. The 2 mm reading is well within the 5mm maximum used to describe this benign condition of "ectopia". In without other findings in the report it is normal. You should clarify this with the doc who ordered the study.

Possible : Nerve impingement in the cervical/  neck area, needs imaging study such as MRI of cervical area, possibly even brain. Have an evaluation as soon as possible to get relief.

Depends where the: Swelling is you are speaking of. If you are talking of within the spine, there are number of things, from infection to injury, things like transverse myelitis, etc. If it is in the meninges, infections like spinal meningitis can occur which causes swelling. If you are talking about outside the spine, where you can feel it on the outside, can be anything from spasms to infections. Hope that helps!
