Need more evaluation: See a sport medicine or orthopedic doctor. You might have soft tissue injury like a strained or torn ligament that x-ray wouldn't pick up. They may recommend an MRI of the ankle for further evaluation, if you pain is not going away and ankle popping when you tilt it. X-ray show bone fracture but can't visualize the ligaments.

would short ankle air cast help ankle tendonitis, pain more when going down stairs/ circular swelling @ lateral area. achepain progresses during day..

Ankle injury: A long leg pneumatic cam walker would be best. Achilles/Gastroc-soleus complex would be better immobilized. Some of the tendons do cross above the knee joint.
MRI is best for ankle injury.

Swelling on one: side of the body especially involving the lower extremity is usually not a good sign.  There are many things that can cause such painless swelling, including anasarca, deep venous clot (DVT), fluid retention from kidney, liver or heart disease, or local invasion of lymphatic system causing an obstruction. Ankle sprain: Recommend you get an mri. You may have ligament tears that have not healed or joint surface damage that did not show on the x-ray.

Need reevaluation: Go back to your orthopedic surgeon , for re-evaluation of injury further study , for ligament tare , joint displacement , lateral malleolar injury etc , some times need surgery

See below: How long ago was your surgery is your knee or leg swollen  . Are you having any drainage from your knee incisions . I would recommend you probably go back to your orthopedic surgeon asap to have them reevaluate your condition.

Need xray: You should really get a xray to make sure there are no fractures from your injury, which I presume was an inversion ankle sprain. With these sprains, fracture of the styloid process of the 5th metatarsal bone is common.

Rest: Ice, compression, elevation. If swelling is severe i would recommend crutches with no weight bearing. If numbness is being felt, the bandage may be on to tight and you need to let the doctor know, .

Usually  a: ligament injury in the foot or ankle.  Make sure your using firm fitting supportive foot wear with good heels and arches.
