Need more evaluation: See a sport medicine or orthopedic doctor. You might have soft tissue injury like a strained or torn ligament that x-ray wouldn't pick up. They may recommend an MRI of the ankle for further evaluation, if you pain is not going away and ankle popping when you tilt it. X-ray show bone fracture but can't visualize the ligaments.

Yes and No: It is common for one to experience pain for several months following an ankle injury. Popping may indicate ligamentous or tendinous injury. An MRI may be of benefit in diagnosing your pathology.
