i'm considering surgery to treat my overactive thyroid as the medication is not improving it, are there any dangerous side effects of thyroidectomy?

Risk of surgery: Hyperthyroidism is typically treated with either anti-thyroid drugs, radioactive iodine, or surgery. Most people in the us receive radioactive iodine if thyroid medication is ineffective. Surgery carries a risk related to anesthesia, as with any other surgery. In addition, one typically becomes hypothyroid following surgery. Care must be taken to not damage parathyroid or nerves to the voice box.

swelling after thyroid surgery 3 days ago, the left lobe (a 4 cm nodule was on it) and the isthmus ? was removed. the whole area (including right under my chin) is huge. is this normal?

This : This is excessive swelling and should be seen asap.  Typically an expanding hematoma (collection of blood in the wound bed where the thyroid lobe was removed) also causes excessive pain.  If that is happening, see your surgeon right away.

i had total thyroidectomy due to huge multinodular goiter with compression 1 week ago. is a 1.5" diameter x 3" long swelling needing narcotics typical?

Post-op pain: This really depends on how the surgery went. Opioids for post-op pain is fine, it has been 1.5 weeks so the need for the opioid should have reduced as you should be healing quite well.

is there any doctor that would perform a thyroidectomy with a ft4 of 48.8?, i seem to be resistent to medication and i'm willing to risk the surgery.

Graves treatment: The treatment of graves disease includes medications, radioactive iodine, or surgery.  All are acceptable forms of treatment  you should see an endocrinologist to help guide you and determine whether you really are resistant.  Also, consider radioactive iodine as an alternative to surgery.  If you decide on surgery, it should be done by an experienced thyroid surgeon, not just any general surgeon.

i am shceduled for a total thyroidectomy at 3:15pm today and used crystal meth last night. will there be complications with surgery?

TELL YOUR SURGEON: It is critical you inform the surgical team.  You are at potential anesthesia risk!!  Furthermore, ASAP, get into a drug rehab program, you are engaging in totally risky behavior, with a horrible drug.  You need help in this area NOW, not later.

my wife 42, after total thyroidectomy surgery , a month later she received i-133 therapy 120 units. full body scan shows no metastasis. prognosis of it?

Good prognosis: In thyroid cancers over all prognosis is excellent.. It is good she has ' no metastasis '     need more information , histological type , when  surgery was done , is there any any metastasis at that time, her age  etc . Stage of the disease is important to predict prognosis . Most common type is papillary cancer of thyroid , which has very good out come . Good luck.

how soon after a 7 day course of provera (medroxyprogesterone) can a total thyroidectomy be performed? can the surgery be done soon before or during the provra treatment?

Anytime: Hi. There is no relationship between when you take Provera and have a thyroidectomy. Since the generally accepted indication for total thyroidectomy is thyroid cancer or a strong suspicion of it, keep track of your priorities. The anesthesiologist and the surgeon will go over what meds you're taking, but they will NOT be concerned about medroxyprogesterone. Good luck!

2-3 weeks: Hematomas are collections of blood. They initially coagulate then liquefy after 1-2 weeks.  After they liquefy your body will resorb them or you can have them drained.

Not Good.: Very likely that your procedure will be performed under general anesthesia. Your anesthesiologist will be able to keep you “still”;  generally speaking,  coughing during the procedure would be very unusual. Most good anesthesiologists will also try to minimize coughing/straining even when patients are waking up ( i call this no “bucking around” time). Best wishes with your upcoming procedure.

having a total thyroidectomy on tuesday for gd but ptu (propylthiouracil) has caused low t4/ft3 (ft3 0.8) i know i can't have the surgery hyper but is hypo a problem?

Thyroid replacement: Once your thyroid has been removed, you will need thyroid replacement to normalize your metabolic function  since you will no longer produce any thyroid hormones. Let your doctor guide you through the dose adjustment process.
