what could be the cause of swelling above my left hip. about a year ago i had surgery due to herniated discs on my left side? could that be a factor?

Varies: There are many potential causes and a good exam can go a long way in determining the cause.  Having a disc surgery would usually not cause swelling above the hip.  Some patients can get a bursitis and this can cause pain, swelling, and tenderness above the hip and there are some good options for that if that is the case.  Consider being seen.

Sciatica: Yes it can cause such feeling. It is called referred symptoms  as the problem is in the spine but the feelings are in the hip

Expected: Swelling in the affected limb after hip or knee surgery is expected. That will resolve as you become mor mobile.

Check your veins: There are several causes for this type of presentation, some of which are serious. You need to get for varicose veins among other things. Because this is one sided, you need to make sure nothing is going on in your pelvis that can block the vein. See your doctor.

No problem!: Sometimes tendons pop as they slide around, and sometimes joints make loud noises as well. But if you're able to walk, have no numbness or weakness and you're pain free, don't worry.  If it were anything significant you would have pain and/or difficulty walking.

Unlikely but: Labral tears often cause pain in the groin or front of the hip during physical activity or with deep flexion (bending) and rotation of the hip. Some individuals with labral tears of the hip will also have clicking or a sense of catching deep within the hip during certain activities. Swelling is  not  a usual symptom.
