NO: The term sciatica refers to irritation/compression of the sciatic nerve and pain typically runs down the back of the thigh and into the outside portion of the leg. Sciatica does not cause swelling. However, other conditions which mimic sciatica like a blood clot or injury can present in a similar fashion. You need to see your doctor.

Swelling unlikely: However when sometimes the nerves are irritated they give a numbing sensation that can be mistaken for a swelling feeling. If indeed you are getting swelling, then see your doctor to determine what evaluations need to be done.
