Short: If the stent is placed in electively (and not for myocardial infarction), recovery is quite short.  We tell our patients not to walk a long distance, lift anything heavy, or drive a car for 2 days.  They are also instructed not to submerge the puncture site in the leg for one week.  Showers are okay.

Stent: A coronary artery stent is a device inserted into a coronary artery to help hold the blood vessel open so that it doesn't re close after it is opened by a balloon.

Expand. steel tube..: A heart stent is a small, 2.25-4.5 mm diameter (when expanded) stainless steel tube. The walls are cut with a laser, into varying patterns due to patent designs. They are compressed onto a balloon catheter that is advanced over a very small wire, (0.014" diam.) to the site of blockage, then the balloon is inflated with liquid, deploying the stent, at pressures up to 10-20 psi. It won't move.

Not necessarily : An angiogram is the diagnostic test used to see blockages within an artery (or vein). This is done by injecting contrast dye in the vessels and taking pictures. Once a significant blockage is found then it may be treated with a balloon or stent.

Steel stents: They are made of a number of different materials, most notably nitinol, not just steel.  There are even dissolveable stents currently under developement.

Not sure: I don't live near ny so i can't speak for individual hospitals, but your experience is only as good as the cardiologist performing the stent. I would use the "who would you go to if it was your family" approach if you know people within the medical community.

Coronary stent: Coronary stents can not be "replaced" as such. However, they can be re-opened or restented if they renarrow , or restenose. The  injury or trauma to the vessel wall during the initial stent placement results in a healing response with scar tissue growth. With current drug-eluting stents, scar tissue growth is inhibited and renarrowing occurs in only approximately 5%.

Bad stuff: If a stent closes slowly (stenosis) or quickly (thrombosis) the net effect is the same. Reduced or complete absence of blood flow to the area that the stent is keeping open. That means that area will not get blood and infarct and die.
