A member asked:

Angiogram and heart stent the same thing?

4 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

Not necessarily : An angiogram is the diagnostic test used to see blockages within an artery (or vein). This is done by injecting contrast dye in the vessels and taking pictures. Once a significant blockage is found then it may be treated with a balloon or stent.

No: They are often performed at the same time, but the angiogram is much safer, just injecting liquid dye into the artery (a diagnostic procedure). The stent is a therapeutic procedure that is higher risk of complications (death, bleeding, heart attack, and stroke).
