Steel stents: They are made of a number of different materials, most notably nitinol, not just steel. There are even dissolveable stents currently under developement.

To prevent body from: Reacting to it. Stainless steel is inert, and won't provoke a rejection response. Actually, most modern day stents are now made of an alloy containing platinum and chromium.
