Not life threatening: But, depends on type of svt.  Generally svt always occurs the same way - same symptoms every episode-  since the short circuit is a fixed path, but this is not always true.

Good question: On average, heart rates over 180 are potentially fatal. Heart rates under 160 are usually not fatal, but they can be serious.  The faster the heart rate in svt, the less blood fills the heart and the less blood is pumped to the rest of the body.

From : From your description it does not sound that the condition is life threatening. However there are many different factors that go into evaluating the risk in a particular patient and you should be under the care of an electrophysiologist. Most major medical centers in ny area have very competent electrophysiology divisions. There are new definite treatments that can eliminate the recurrence of arrhythmia in many patients.

Usually not: Svt is an arrhythmia originating in the top portions of the heart. It may be caused by an abnormal circuit within the heart's electrical system that the patient was actually born with. Heart rates can reach up to 180-200 BPM and rfe patient may fell pretty lousey with this but do not carry the same clinical implications as vt. These can usually be treated with medications or catheter ablation.

Possibly: This is a large, diverse topic. There is a familial basis for some patients with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is typically a genetic disease and some cohorts have increased prevalence of svt and wpw. There are mitochondrial mutations that appear to have increased prevalence of svt.

Not directly: Infection is a pro thrombotic state(clot causing), so a sever illness can lead to an set or dvt.  The pleurisy itself (inflammation of the lining of the lung) is a part of the inflammatory cascade that can lead there, but doesn't directly cause svts.

ABSOLUTELY!: Alcohol can be directly toxic to the heart in sufficient quantities. Excessive drinking can cause any number of cardiac problems including svt.

Record it: An ekg done while you are having tachycardia, or a 24h holter or longer event recorder will define it.  You can't be sure by the way it feels.

Yes: Because most so called SVT is the result of an extra piece of "wiring" in the heart, this extra piece of wiring can be ablated (destroyed) which stops the SVT from recurring.

Short pr: The short pr in WPW implies an accessory pathway for av conduction. Having multiple pathways for impulse conduction allows multiple reentry circuits for stimuli and tachycardia is much easier to sustain.
