Red, tender: If you have redness, extreme tenderness, or drainage from the incision, you should be concerned about an infection.  This would be urgent, so you should call your surgeon immediately.

If your surgery was some time ago and the incision has already healed, then an infection is much less likely.  Still, if you are worried, then your surgeon is the best person to make that diagnosis.

how common is a bone infection or fracture site infection with closed bone fractures?

Accepted Answer

Not common: If the fracture is truly closed, bacteria should not be able to infect the bone since it isn't exposed to the outside environment.  Fractures, where bone is penetrated through the skin or visible through a wound, have variable infection rates based on the size of the wound and the time until the patient receives antibiotics.

all.of my upper teeth.pulled 5 days ago. gums: greenish scabs over them and are hot, dry. pain: 4. there are large lumps in wisdom site. infection?

Accepted Answer

Normal healing: The irregularities will gradually over the next month fill in with the new tissue. In the mean time, the area should be kept clean especially after meals with salt water rinses or a soft toothbrush. Take care.

Weekly.: Early after surgery your surgeon may ask you to stop by frequently. After a week, sutures or staples need to be removed. Then, a check in a couple of weeks is typical.

i have a temporary ileostomy from a total colectomy, how common are hematomas and infections or other problems in the reversal surgery site?

Accepted Answer

Ileostomy reversal: Although it varies slightly depending on exactly what kind of reversal will be done, surgical complications such as infection and hematoma are rather unusual these days. If you follow your surgeon's advice, they are unlikely to happen. If you have any problems after the surgery, be sure to contact the surgeon promptly. Good luck

Evaluation: Oral or IV antibiotics are indicated and you need an evaluation by your physician and surgeon.

is it a good idea to use mupirocin to prevent infections and promote healing on a surgical site with sutures?

Accepted Answer

: Not really.  Mupirocin is a topical antibiotic (directed mostly against Staph).  Has nothing to do with “promoting wound healing”. Some surgeons believe it lowers the risk of post-operative infection, other surgeons believe it makes no difference. I don’t know (and no one else really does either. Mostly based on “belief”)

Accepted Answer

Unlikely: If the incision is healing well, odds are that the infection has been adequately treated.  If you had mesh implanted as part of the incision repair, then this might be the reason to look into a CT scan or MRI.

had surgery on my foot (navicular fx) and the area around the incision site, farther than 2 inches from the site, has gotten red and warm. infection?

Accepted Answer

Watch and call.: Knowing the time frame or the post operative day count would make the assessment a whole lot easier and accurate. Red and warm does not necessarily make a wound be infected as these are also found in as part of the normal inflammatory response. Best to at least call the surgeon and tell him the situation as he is the best person to direct the appropriate directed response.

i had me cysts removed on 17/3/2021 and today after 24hrs post surgery my little finger site where operated is throbbing continusously. is that a sign of infection and should i see my gp?

Accepted Answer

: Can’t tell based on what you described.  Some local pain is common anytime the skin is cut.  Should be decreasing and mostly gone in 24-48 hrs.  If persisting beyond then or getting worse rather than better, yes, see your GP
