was taking daily supplement of glutamine. stopped and 2 weeks later had first diverticulitis flare. havent taken any glutamine in last 6 months and had numerous flares could this be the cause all along?

: I have never heard of glutamine deficiency as a risk factor for diverticulitis or if it can prevent diverticulitis. Surgery may be indicated if you truly have had so many bouts of diverticulitis in a short period of time. Good luck.

on lansoprazole for a year 15mg a day for diverticulitis and for risk bleeding on plavix i see lansoprazole can decrease my magnesium.so on my medication ,especially ramipril can i take magnesium supplements as there is moderate risk of hyperkalemia?

You need levels: Before you assume that a possible side effect of a medication is going to happen to you you need to know for sure.  Too much magnesium, potassium or calcium can be as bad as too little.  A simple blood test looking at your magnesium and electrolytes will answer that question, and then you have information to tailor what if any supplements to take

Yes: Anything that helps bowel health is good. Also rule out food sensitivities. Consider testing with alcat.

Good diet you eat: You don't have to waste money on fiber like metamucel , fiber capsules , vegetables , fruits , whole wheat bread  etc   all has fiber , and is free.

: Diverticulosis is common, no medication or supplement, eating high fiber diet as your doctor's advice, active life style and exercise to avoid constipation which is a risk factor for diverticulitis, a complication of diverticulosis.

i have epiploic appendagitis and do you need to be on anabiotics for this to resolve the issue ive had it now for for five days and it seems only a little bit better? i want to know does one have to be on meds, and just got over diverticulitis?

: Epiploic appendagitis is not treated with antibiotics, usually it requires only anti-inflammatories like Ibuprofen. of course we are assuming this is the correct diagnosis as it can be easily differentiated from diverticulitis on a CT. It takes a few days to resolve. It can be present at the same time with diverticulitis which requires antibiotics. If pain is persistent reevaluation is needed.

Early vs. Late: Acute diverticulitis is associated with swelling of the colon that may create a temporary partial blockage of the colon. Therefore, we often advocate no food or just liquids during the initial phase of treatment. When food is resumed, it is common to recommend a low-residue diet early on.  After the inflammation resolves, we often recommend high-fiber diets, which may reduce the risk of recurrence.

It can be.: Diverticulitis occurs when a small pocket on the wall of the colon ruptures.  If the hole seals quickly, one may be treated as an out-patient with oral antibiotics.  Often, the inflammation is more severe, requiring IV antibiotics in the hospital.  Rarely the hole doesn't seal, requiring emergency surgery to remove the ruptured segment of colon.

It is rare: Diverticulitis has various potential complications which ranges from minor infection which responds well to oral antibiotics, to severe infection and peritonitis caused by spillage of stool from colon into the abdominal cavity. In severe cases it usually needs surgery and in these cases patient may end up having a colostomy. These days it is so rare to die from diverticulitis.
