is a suddenly visible epiglottis a worry?
i had a throat infection in january 2020 and since then my epiglottis has been visible (not my uvula- its the white flap i'm referring to) on and off.  when it's visible i can feel there's something in throat?

Interesting: I wonder why you have never seen your epiglottis before. If you open your mouth and depressed the tongue it is easy to see. I'm sure it has been there your whole life and if you have no problems with swallowing, stay cool &amp; relax.

Peek A Boo!!: Yes, as long as it's in the back of his throat and not hanging from his ear. A small percentage of people have an epiglottis that peeks up from the back of the tongue. That's OK as long as it's not causing any disturbing symptoms, like a foreign body sensation or chronic inflammation and pain.

is epiglottitis rare in 14yr? can they get it if they have bronchitis? if you have epiglottitis is your epiglottis then visible?

Epiglottis is rare: You can always see your epiglottis with an xray or camera down the nose. Vaccines have made epiglottis much less common.

Though : Though it is much more common in children, a visible epiglottis can be a normal variant in an adult.  That being said, you need to make sure that it is indeed the epiglottis that you are seeing and not an epiglottis or tongue base tumor (which are almost always painless).  As long as you are not having difficulty breathing or swallowing, have not noticed changes in how it looks, and have been examined by a doctor who tells you that what you see is a normal epiglottis, then you have a normal variant and shouldn't worry about it.

See doctor: I don't think you can see your epiglottis.  I think probably you mean your tonsil or your uvula --not epigottis.  Sometimes, people can have /feel foreign body sensation/feeling something stuck on the throat- that can be caused by acid reflux. However other things like infection, motility problem, etc  should be ruled out. You need to see your doctor to get checked.

: Your epiglottis is suppose to be "sticking up" allowing air to enter and exit your trachea and lungs. When you swallow, the back of your tongue pushes down on the epiglottis, closing off the trachea, preventing anything from entering your trachea.

Normal: It is not uncommon especially in children or people with smaller tongues to see the tip of the epiglottis especially, with gagging.  It will only affect voice quality if it is swollen.

Neither: If you do not have symptoms, do not worry about the epiglottis being visible.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex.
