Any injury?: It does not sound worrisome, especially since you have had it for a long time.   Ask you doctor to have a look the next time you are there.

Raynaud's disease: I need more info, but based on your description you could have a condition called raynaud's disease, especially if that happens after exposure to cold water and/or exposure to cold weather, this is better discussed with your regular physician..

Get it looked @ ASAP: I take it you have had an injury, from your description you have either a large hematoma of the thumb or have lost the blood supplyeither way it needs attention.

See a dermatologist: There are several things that can cause what you describe. Having a dermatologist examine you would deb your best first step. This could be something called a gloms tumor (benign) but really needs to be examined to be sure. A biopsy may also be necessary to confirm the diagnosis.

i fell and hurt my thumb. i'm unable to grasp tightly and the base of the thumb is swollen. i can move the thumb around however. what should i do?

Should consult doc: It is is possible that you only sustained a significant contusion/sprain to your hand from the fall, but injury to/at the base of the thumb is a bit concerning for a scaphoid bone fracture. Fracture of other bones in the hand is not as concerning because of the unique blood-supply here : fracture across this bone severs the blood supply. Thus, i recomend seeing doc for an eval/treatment. Good luck.

The answer is yes: You should get to a doctor.  I would have expected some significant healing by now.  You should get an Xray at least if not an MRI to document the possibility of bony or soft tissue injury.

RightOutOfTheBlk&amp;Blu: Yes, unless your thumb got banged by an invisible painless hammer, you should see a doctor. Of course, a lot more needs to be known about you, like any chronic illness, what medications you take,what types of activities or work you engage in, etc. But at your age a painful blue (or pale) thumb that just comes out of nowhere is concerning and you should make sure your heart and blood vessels are OK

R.I.C.E: Rest, ice, compression ( splinting ) and elevation PLUS the judicious use of either Advil (ibuprofen) or Ibuprofen if you are not allergic to these medications. If pain is severe, I suggest UC or ER for x rays.
