Cough when lying: May be reflux, or post nasal drip , even asthmatic may cough as your lungs are more compressed when ying down.  Check PFTs, check for reflux consider ranitidine/ prevecid if have reflux,  consider zyrtec before bed to decrease nasal congestion and  post nasal drip if that is present. f/u /w/ doc

Night time coughing: The most common reason for night time coughing when prone is acid and acidic odors coming from heartburn and esophageal acid.  If you have this you must begin to treat this with strong ant-acids. If you are overweight this is a vital way your body is telling you it is time to lose weight.

Prolonged acid reflux can cause cancer in the esophagus. Please do not ignore this symptom.

Nighttime cough: Coughing at night can occur in a number of ailments, most commonly GERD (gastroesophgeal reflux disease), asthma, post-nasal drip/allergies, and fluid in the lungs for example from congestive heart failure.  An allergy to dust mites in the pillow could potentially cause coughing at night.  If persistent, it is worthwhile getting evaluated in clinic. A proper history/physical should get the answer.

Nighttime cough: If the cough is a back of the throat tickle due to mucous draining down from the nose and sinuses when you first lie down, i personally find the most effective medication to be a mixture of Phenergan (promethazine) and Codeine cough syrup. If the nighttime cough is happening in the middle of the night associated with a sensation of tightness or wheezing in the chest, asthma inhalers will be more effective.
